Görlitz was an outstanding center of trade in the Middle Ages and the early modern period. Located on the Via Regia, one of the most important long-distance roads in Europe, our city attracted numerous merchants. Here they went about their business, as witnessed today by unique architectural monuments. They give an impression of the merchants’ life, organization and defense of trade. Of great value are the Görlitz hall houses – a special form of merchant’s house.
